Ozette Platform
SR. PRODUCT DESIGNER
Sole designer.
Design management, design strategy, research facilitator, testing, UX/UI design.
MY ROLE
I joined a team as a founding product designer, a team-of-one. The primary tasks that I've done:
-
Building Ozette's first-ever design system to scale the design to the development process and unifying front-end environments.
-
Understanding the highly technical and academic focus requirements, then translating that to user requirements.
-
Design the product features, which often include big data visualization.
THE CHALLENGE
To begin something very begining
Ozette (Biotech - flow cytometry) outlines a novel method of analysis of single-cell data, FAUST algorithm, and validates the multiple potential applications to tackle two areas: 1) analysis of complex single-cell datasets; 2) prediction of response to immunotherapy.

Major functionalities developed around visualizations of cell populations and visual manipulation to outlying the clusters of the populations. Statistic and comparison analysis are required as some findings help data scientists analyze their large datasets.

The product was in the early phase, the team was small, and the academic knowledge of the domain was a challenge I had to start with

Our growth began to expose our inefficiencies
As the platform grew, so did our inefficiencies and design inconsistencies, which marked the beginning of how I strengthened and improved collaboration, design education.

The root cause was..
Like most start-ups, we had adopted a "functionality-first-approach" which made us hope to meet the demands of our growing customer base. I uncovered a fragmented communication loop between design and engineering. Due to our short release cycles, engineers and designers quickly built components and features in silos focusing on meeting deployment deadlines.

I took the lead on this problem space and framed our design question as “ How do we unify engineering and design environments to create consistency within our product and improve work efficiencies?”

The solution..
We were building with a guiding design principle. Design and Engineer share a single source of truth via the design system and product design assets. Scale with process, guidelines, and documentation.
